Getting Started with Drum MIDI

Here is how a groove goes from the download to your song. It takes a few minutes the first time.

  1. Download your pack from the link in your order email or on the order page (My Account → Downloads).
  2. Unzip it. Inside is a folder of MIDI files, each labelled with its tempo, and a text file with the drum mapping.
  3. Open your DAW (Ableton Live, Cubase, Logic, Reaper, Pro Tools, FL Studio, GarageBand…) and load your drum VST on an instrument track: EZdrummer, Superior Drummer, GetGood Drums, Addictive Drums or any other.
  4. Drag a groove from the folder onto that track. Set the project tempo to the one in the file’s name. MIDI plays at whatever tempo the project is set to, so you can change it later.
  5. Check the drums. The grooves follow the General MIDI drum map, so most VSTs play them right away. If a hit lands on the wrong drum, choose the VST’s General MIDI mapping or use the text file.

Building a song

Line up grooves for each part (verse, chorus, breakdown), put a fill at the end of a section, then edit: move a crash, drop a kick, change the velocity. It is MIDI, so every hit is yours to change.
